Innovative Collaboration

FHR and Fraunhofer: Pioneers in coating and surface technology

As part of our partnership with Fraunhofer, we develop cutting-edge technologies in coating and surface technology. Our scope of expertise includes the production of anti-reflective coatings, anti-reflective coatings, broadband anti-reflective coatings and high-reflective coatings. These technologies refine optics such as lenses, prisms, mirrors and display glass in smartphones, touch panels and car dashboards.

Masterful layer design
Our interference filters and coatings consist of alternating layers of high and low refractive oxides, such as Nb2O5/SiO2. We realize coating solutions with over 200 layers, whereby the individual layer design determines the filter effect. 


The EOSS series® (FHR.Star.500-EOSS® and FHR.Star.600-EOSS®) from FHR is the world’s most advanced production system deployed in the manufacture of precision optics, interference filters and display glasses. These systems were developed in a joint project with the Fraunhofer Institute for Surface Engineering and Thin Films (Fraunhofer IST) in Braunschweig. 

For less complex anti-reflective coatings – such as broadband anti-reflective coatings – FHR can also offer excellent solutions from FHR.Boxx and FHR.Line product ranges. FHR systems are also used to apply optical coatings to large-area formats for architectural glass and “window films”.
